Summer Performing Arts Camp @ Lankershim Arts Center

The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is developing a new initiative to support performing arts for young people in the North Hollywood (NoHo) area. In an effort to enhance Council District 2’s continued commitment to foster NoHo as a mecca for performing arts in Los Angeles, DCA is committed to developing a performing arts program for young people at the Lankershim Arts Center.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have an unprecedented residual impact on the young people of Los Angeles. Through the performing arts—dance, music, theater, set design, costume design, sound, and lighting design – DCA is investing in young people by building self-confidence, technical skills, social skills, and a positive vision of future opportunities in the performing arts for 7 to 17 year olds.

The DCA Performing Arts Division (PERF) is offering a $25,000 commission to an experienced performing arts organization serving young people to facilitate the pilot program, Summer Performing Arts Camp (SPAC), at the Lankershim Arts Center for four weeks during the 2023 summer season.

As part of the SPAC project grant, applicant organizations will be required to plan, promote, procure, staff, train, and keep records for the youth program under the direction of PERF. When awarded, the organization will also be responsible for ensuring and documenting that all staff working directly with the young people are live scanned (electronic fingerprinting) and vetted in accordance with youth programming standards in the industry. The organization awarded must have the following documentation available within 15 days of award notification: a 501c3 IRS Determination Letter, a Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC) from the City of Los Angeles, and proof of insurance in the City’s KwikComply system.

Only one (1) application may be submitted per organization. Proposed camp plans must include both a performance track and a production track, or one track with a combination of both performance and technical sessions. Proposed plans should include indications for age groups and activities that are age appropriate. The performance track should include dance, musical theater, singing, improvisation, dialects, monologues, audition techniques, production rehearsal, and/or a variation based on experience. The production track should include writing and creating, costume design, set design, logo and poster design, lighting design, sound design, orchestra/instrument rehearsal, and/or a variation based on experience. At the end of each week of camp there should be an informal showing/viewing for participant families to see. At the end of the program there should be a more formal showing of the progress accomplished throughout camp. All work should be wholesome in nature and family friendly.

Preference is given to nonprofit organizations based in the NoHo area or Council District 2. To determine if your organization is within the council district boundaries please visit: neighborhoodinfo.lacity.org (link will open a new browser tab). Enter your physical street address in the search field and click on “FIND.” In your search result, you should see your City Council District number and the LA City Councilmember’s name listed under Elected Officials.
