Awarded annually to Los Angeles based artists, the City of Los Angeles Independent (COLA) Master Artist Project (IMAP) supports the creation of new works by a selection of the city’s most exemplary mid-career artists. COLA IMAP honors the synergetic relationship between Los Angeles, its artists, its history, and its identity as an international arts capital. The Fellows were selected in three review-rounds by eight interdisciplinary peer panelists, including curators, educators, nonprofit gallerists, museum directors, and/or past fellows.

Grand Performances recently presented the following 2023 COLA IMAP Performing and Literary Fellows: performance artist and musician Daniel Corral, performing artist and choreographer/dancer Alia Mohamed, performance artist Jasmine Orpilla, and writer David Ulin.

DCA’s Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) will present the works of 2023 COLA IMAP Design and Visual Artists: Patricia Fernández, Wakana Kimura, Michael Massenburg, Duane Paul, Elyse Pignolet, and Kyungmi Shin from July 13 to September 16, 2023 at the 2023 COLA IMAP Design and Visual Artists Exhibition.

Descanse en Paz: Memorial Paintings from 19th-Century Mexico

This exhibition highlights two popular genres of 19th-century Mexican painting commemorating family members who no longer reside in the household— offering them a lasting presence in the home. The first intimately portrays deceased individuals in likenesses imbued with grief and tender remembrance. The second genre is the uniquely Mexican monja Coronado or “crowned nun” portrait. Images of flowers adorned Brides of Christ were commissioned by the families of women who took Catholic ecclesiastical vows and permanently embarked on cloistered lives.
