In celebration of the NEA Big Read: Los Angeles, the Barnsdall Junior Arts Center will provide 4 sequential workshops exploring various mediums such as Photography, Poetry, and Collage.

Each week students (ages 12-17) will work with a different Professional Artist producing work that explores various themes from Sandra Cisnero’s The House on Mango Street. All artwork created will be assembled into a Booklet/Zine that will be distributed for the public to acquire and experience.

*Students must attend orientation and all workshops

Workshop Schedule:

This series will meet in Studio 1 for 4-weeks on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. beginning April 26th and ending May 24th.

Victorian Christmas

Christmas Holiday display of our finest antiques, Santa Clauses, angels, choir boys, and village scenes that depict Dickens’s Victorian Christmas. Our Christmas tree will be decorated with our collection of antique ornaments and there will be a display of vintage Christmas cards.

Music in the Chinese Garden

Enjoy traditional Chinese music on Wednesday afternoons in the Garden of Flowing Fragrance. A different solo musician performs each week, playing unamplified melodies on classical instruments including the dizi, pipa,  and erhu. Let the music transport you to another time and place as you stroll through one of the most magical landscapes in Southern California.

Learn to Draw Comics with Shannon Watters

Celebrate LGBTQIA+ Heritage Month by learning the basics of drawing and making comics with Shannon Watters, the co-creator and co-writer of the comic book series Lumberjanes and the graphic novel Hollow. No previous skills needed…just an open heart and a willingness to put pencil to paper.
