First Powwow Comes to Cal State LA: The People’s Home Intertribal Indigenous Powwow

United American Indian Involvement and California State University, Los Angeles will host its first The People’s Home: Intertribal Indigenous Powwow on July 25, 2026 at Cal State LA to bring together Native American and Indigenous communities, students, dancers, singers, artists, and families for a day of cultural celebration, education, and community connection.

Powwows are a time to come together, celebrate and honor traditions. It is a social gathering that brings Native people and the broader community together to celebrate art, singing and dancing. The People’s home Powwow is welcome for everyone to take part, whether it’d your first Powwow or you’ve attended for years. We ask that you join with an open heart and respect for the drum, dancers and arena.

This community event will feature Grand Entry ceremonies, traditional dancing, drum groups, Native artists, food vendors, and cultural representation. Organizers say the powwow represents an important step in honoring Indigenous traditions and strengthening Native visibility on campus.

“As an Indigenous person, it brings a lot of happiness because our culture is a gift to this world,” said Jesus Escandon, Vice President of the American Indian Student Alliance Club and a senior at Cal State LA. “To me, having a powwow here on the Cal State LA campus means that we get to offer that gift to the local community and university community while creating a space to celebrate who we are and share our traditions with others.” 

The People’s Home: Intertribal Indigenous Powwow is open to the public and welcomes attendees of all backgrounds to learn, celebrate and experience the diversity and richness of Indigenous cultures.
