DCA CELEBRATES 2023 LUNAR NEW YEAR WITH ARTS AND CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND ACTIVITIES

DCA, with the offices of Los Angeles City Council Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, and 12, and the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens invite the public to attend free community events featuring arts and cultural performances and activities to celebrate the 2023 Lunar New Year. The six events will celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, and offer cultural arts and performances for diverse age groups throughout the month.

SUIHO EN – JAPANESE GARDEN

Amid the San Fernando Valley lies an oasis – a 6.5-acre garden featuring three gardens in one. First, the Japanese Garden has a dry Zen meditation garden containing Tortoise Island, a three-buddha arrangement of stones, and a wisteria arbor at the end of the Plover Path. Next along the path is an expansive Chisen or “wet-strolling” garden with waterfalls, lakes and streams, abundant greenery, and stone lanterns, which were hand-carved by artisans in Japan. ASIAN PACIFIC RESOURCE CENTER – LA COUNTY LIBRARY

Spend an afternoon at a special collection of the LA County Library that encompasses academic materials, film, music, novels, magazines, and newspapers. The collection focuses on the Asian American Pacific Islander American experience, with core holdings in history, art, and culture. The center has over 100 titles on microfilm of historical Asian immigrant newspapers published in the US.

Sacred Realms: Temple Murals By Shashi Dhoj Tulachan

The nine paintings in this exhibition are the work of one extraordinary Buddhist monk named Shashi Dhoj Tulachan, a second-generation thangka artist living in Tuksche, a remote village in Mustang, Nepal’s northernmost district adjacent to Tibet. The monk has devoted much of his life to restoring a nearby 16th-century gompa (Tibetan monastery) called the Chhairo Gompa. Shashi Dhoj Tulachan has painted this set of images by combining the traditional motifs of one of the foremost schools recognized by high-level monks…
