Creating in Community: Fowler at 60 celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of the Fowler Museum at UCLA. As we look back at the research, exhibitions, and public programs of the past sixty years, we recognize that the most joyful and interesting projects have been those created with others. Through these collaborations fresh ideas bloomed, unforeseen challenges and expectations arose, and new connections were forged. Come revisit these extraordinary projects with us, as we bring this spirit of engagement into the future…
I Will Meet You Yet Again: Contemporary Sikh Art
This exhibition invites a fresh look at the history and vitality of the Sikh culture through paintings, posters, tapestries, and multimedia installations. A hybrid array of material approaches reflects personal and gendered perspectives on the history of the community and its visual expressions. Thursday – Sundays 12:00 noon – 5:00 p.m., Wednesday 12:00 noon – 8:00 p.m.
Alice Wang: We Are Extraterrestrial
In her first solo museum exhibition in the US, We Are Extraterrestrial, Alice Wang showcases recent prints, glass sculptures, newly commissioned ceramic sculptures, film, and an artist’s book that reflect the artist’s deep curiosity for the space between the real and the imaginary. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m., Thursdays 12:00 noon – 7:00 p.m.
Music in the Chinese Garden
Every Wednesday afternoon, a different solo musician performs, playing unamplified melodies on classical instruments, including the dizi, pipa, and erh. Let the music transport you to another time and place as you stroll through one of the most magical landscapes in Southern California. (Canceled in the event of rain.)
CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY WITH EMMY LAM
Chinese calligraphy has been a traditional art of writing for more than 5,000 years. It is especially significant and vital during numerous Chinese festivals and celebrations. This hour-long workshop is a superb opportunity for everyone to learn how to write a different language and to learn about Chinese culture in a fun and creative way. Participants will learn to write 24 Chinese characters and take home their prized work. All materials provided. RSVP via email ebarrera@lapl.org.
