Join us for a rare film Screening of the film Site 2, directed by Rithy Panh. Special introduction by Colin Grafton. The event is free but spaces are limited. Reserve your seat at the website.

In 1979, alone at 15 after the genocidal murders of his father, mother, sister, niece, and nephew, Rithy Panh ended up in a refugee camp for Cambodians who survived interminable years of civil war, starvation, and torture. Unlike most, he found a new life in France, taken in by distant relatives and studying filmmaking at the prestigious national film school L’IDHEC. Returning to his homeland in 1988, he encountered a woman living in Site 2, the largest of the camps lying just across the Thai border, which became the inescapable and inhumane home to some 180,000 Cambodians during the 1980s. Our Virgil in this infernal camp, Yim Om, lost her entire family to the Khmer Rouge, and now lives with those damning memories—as clear as day and as dark as night—in a perpetual exile of loneliness, boredom, and fear. Next along the path is an expansive Chisen or “wet-strolling” garden with waterfalls, lakes and streams, abundant greenery, and stone lanterns, which were hand-carved by artisans in Japan. At the end of this path…
