Join Mayor Karen Bass; Councilmember John S. Lee, Councilmember Nithya Raman, the Los Angeles City Council, and the 2024 Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Committee to officially commemorate and celebrate the opening of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the City of Los Angeles.

This year’s Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration will kick off with Mayor Bass, Councilmember Lee, and Councilmember Raman honoring several individuals with the 2024 R.I.S.E Awards. These awardees are outstanding individuals who have uplifted the AAPI community in different fields including entertainment, nonprofit, and public service sectors.

The theme for this year’s Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month is Strength Through Community, a message that reflects the importance of the bonds in the AAPI community throughout Los Angeles.

Descanse en Paz: Memorial Paintings from 19th-Century Mexico

This exhibition highlights two popular genres of 19th-century Mexican painting commemorating family members who no longer reside in the household— offering them a lasting presence in the home. The first intimately portrays deceased individuals in likenesses imbued with grief and tender remembrance. The second genre is the uniquely Mexican monja Coronado or “crowned nun” portrait. Images of flowers adorned Brides of Christ were commissioned by the families of women who took Catholic ecclesiastical vows and permanently embarked on cloistered lives.
