Join exhibition artists Duane Paul and Kyungmi Shin for a walkthrough of their latest work in COLA 2023 followed by a brief Q&A moderated by DCA LAMAG Curator, Nancy Meyer.

Duane Paul (b. 1969, Jamaica, West Indies; lives and works in Los Angeles)

Duane Paul’s “photographic sculptures” consist of a personalized alphabet of biomorphic  shapes and marks that are crucial to the artist’s fractured and fragmented memories, reflections, and experiences as a gay, Afro-Caribbean immigrant living within the Black American
experience. Symbolism, materiality, and representation are essential to his understanding of the visible and invisibility of urban life. Using self-portraiture, textiles and utilitarian objects in his practice, he directly addresses embodied and environmental histories of erasure, exploitation,
intimacy and objectification.

Paul received his BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Paul’s work has been featured in group exhibitions including those held at Transformative Arts, Los Angeles, CA (2023); Nan Rae Gallery, Burbank, CA (2022); Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA (2022);
Art Share LA, Los Angeles, CA (2021); J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2021); LAUNCH LA Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2020); the California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2020, 2016); Walter Maciel Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2018); and Boston Court Performing Arts Center, Pasadena, CA (2015). His works can be found in collections around the world, including MUDE Museu in Lisbon, Portugal; National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney, Australia; California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA; and the New Museum, New York, NY. His work has been featured in publications such as i-D Magazine, Artillery, Flaunt Magazine, Art Voices, and Kaltblut.

 

Kyungmi Shin (b. 1963, Busan, South Korea; lives and works in Los Angeles)

Kyungmi Shin received her MFA in Sculpture and Installation from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995 and studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her research-based practice incorporates varying degrees and dimensions of her personal life and identity. She
centers the concept of cultural hybridity through the reimagination of her own family archive, seamlessly combining chinoiserie painting styles, Korean Shaman motifs, Christian iconography and traditional Korean Still Life elements. Layering, in this way, elaborately maps cultural intersectionalities.

Shin has had solo exhibitions at Various Small Fires, Seoul, South Korea (2023); Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, CA (2021); Orange County Museum of Art, Santa Ana, CA (2020); See Line Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2010); Nichols Gallery at Pitzer College, Pomona, CA (2009); Los
Angeles International Airport (2008); and Pasadena Public Library, Pasadena, CA (2004). Her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at Barbati Gallery, Venice, Italy (2023); Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2022); Marguo Gallery, Paris, France (2022); Charlie James
Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2021); and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2021). Shin is the recipient of the Pasadena Cultural Affairs Individual Artist Grant and the California Community Foundation Emerging Artist Grant. Her work can be found in the collections of the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive.
