MLK Day at the Skirball Cultural Center

FREE on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.

In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in honor of the legacy of Dr. King, the Skirball is opening its doors and offering FREE admission to This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement. The exhibition showcases rarely-seen photos of Dr. King alongside more than 150 photographs taken by Movement insiders who chronicled the fight for civil rights.

On this day, enjoy General Admission and access to the rest of the Museum.

MLK  Day Activities:

  • Docent-led tour of civil rights-era photography exhibition This Light of Ours (1:00 pm).
  • Curator-led tour of The American Library, showcasing the stories of immigrants and Black Americans affected by the Great Migration (2:00 pm).
  • Pop-up poetry and spoken-word performances in the galleries throughout the afternoon.
  • Noah’s Ark at the Skirball – Working together, we can weather any storm. Timed entry required. Reserve your tickets in advance.
  • Please note: The Archaeology Dig and Family Art Studio will be closed.
  • Cooking demo with the Skirball’s Executive Sous Chef Justin Simmons (12:00 pm).
  • Relax in our family lounge, play games, read a special selection of books, and listen to exhibition-inspired music (Haas Conference Center).
  • Screening throughout the afternoon, James Blue’s The March (1964) offers a striking cinematic portrayal of American citizens who took part in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. (33 minutes. No MPAA rating.)

We Live in Painting: The Nature of Color in Mesoamerican Art

Mesoamerican artists held a cosmic responsibility: as they adorned the surfaces of buildings, clay vessels, textiles, bark-paper pages, and sculptures with color, they (quite literally) made the world. JAPANESE GARDEN – KOI POND AT SOUTH COAST BOTANIC GARDENS
