Being able to obtain identification that reflects your true identity should be a given for all of us, but for many people in transition, this a complicated and often expensive legal process. Trans folks seeking to change their name and gender marker on official government records typically face the cost of over $600 in total (compared with $15 for those changing their name at marriage and $100 at any other time). Unfortunately, the job discrimination and isolation from support networks faced by all too many trans people simply put this basic necessity out of reach for many, creating situations that range from awkward to outright dangerous whenever they show their ID. Please join Out in Santa Monica in partying with a purpose–raising money for these legal fees, meeting great people (or old friends!), and having a fabulous time!
