Groove: Artists and Intaglio Prints, 1500 to Now
This exhibition surveys over five hundred years of intaglio prints drawn from the extensive collections of the UCLA Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum. The intaglio medium comprises engravings, etchings, dry point, aquatint, and mezzotint, all of which involve the use of a copper or zinc plate that is incised, inked, and printed. Mark Bradford’s 150 Portrait Tone, a mural-size composition that contains elements of both abstraction and realism, is based on an idea for a work that the artist conceived after the fatal shooting of Philando Castile by a police officer in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in July 2016.
